3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
IPC media
this company produces 60 different media brands this tells me there is a wide audience already. Top brands are distributed from IPC this gives them credibility and a good reputation that I would happily associate my magazine with.
IPC media already has a target audience of teens and of music fans, there are no music magazines for teens so this is a good opportunity for me to combine the two. So this is an advantage to me, I wouldn’t have to compete with a similar magazine genre therefore IPC media would hopefully benefit from my magazine and their market would expand from this, also it would be a great advantage for me to use such a major distributor. Although IPC media does not produce magazines like my own I still feel confident that they have the experience to deal with my target audience and genre as they are so successful with NME and Teen Now. However there could be a reason as to why other magazine companies haven’t already took this niche in the market. Maybe I need to do further research as to why.
Bauer media distributes over 300 magazines online, on TV, radio stations and in other countries. This tells me they have good connections and communication with a wide audience. 4music is a magazine and tv company that have a teenage/student target audience which is ideal for me to work alongside. However they are so well known, without promotion from them themselves can I guarantee that my magazine will even be recognised?
Large communications, fan base and target audience due to many different forms of promotion and advertising. All of which my magazine would require to become known and successful .
On the other hand, this tells me that Bauer have experience of distributing this type of genre to this target audience therefore I know my magazine would be distributed correctly. As I feel my magazine has a lot of potential, if I became established within bauer I feel they would be the better company between the two to get me involved in other areas such as TV or radio.
Both distributors have a large amount of experience and success in distributing music magazines. However I feel the distributor I would prefer my magazine to go to would be IPC media. Although bauer has impressive connections and communications as it uses radio and tv I feel as a starting brand new magazine I will be more secure with IPC media that can focus their attention to my target audience, I wont feel as if I am in competition with similar magazines at IPC media whereas at bauer there were a few different radios and magazines that already has secued my target audience, I feel although it would be unwise to attempt to take some of this audience as I am brand new to the market. Also the experience with this distributor has shown to be successful at distributing magazines such as the high standard sellings of NME
Overall I could not choose Bauer media as I believe it would be quite a challenge to distribute my music magazine with it being similar to the genres they already distribute such as 4music. Although they have large connection across the media industry I feel that their target audience aren’t looking for a brand new magazine, I feel theyre already settled with the magazines, radios and tv programmes that are up and running. In comparison, a brand new magazine would appear to be weak and less popular to these which I think would down grade my magazine and take away the hype.
