Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The front cover image consists of my three models that make up the band sugarmix. I asked the girls to stand closely together to give connotations of their unity within the group. They were also asked to pull a similar facial expression to demonstarte how their attitudes and emotions are similar. For instance if the two outside girls were giving a full beam smile whilst the middle model looked serious it wouldn’t give a clear representation of the group. However I did ensure the three girls had different styles and looks to them, to create realism, as in most girl groups there is variety. In comparison to the image of ‘Little Mix’ I feel as if the pose the girls hold is similar to that of a real girl group. Also with the variation of heights in the group with the central model being a few inches taller I decided to take the shot from a high angle, not to represent dominance over the group but to ensure that a low shot didn’t show the middle model as the dominant of the group. With this angle I feel I have successfully made each individual look just as dominant as her band members, this could be due to the outside models almost leaning into the camera shot. I like this effect as it shows a sense of confidence, which is essential from a front cover. For the first issue of my magazine it would have been easy to have all three models smiling and looking happy, however I feel this would make a brand new target audience turn a blind eye to this as it could just blend in with any other typical magazine. The use of a sturn mysterious facial expression places more focus on the eyes. Almost as if the facial expression is hiding what the girls really have to say, as if it will all be revealed inside of the magzine. Which is exactly what I wanted to create.

The front cover and contents page placed together show the house style being maintained throughout, this represents how the magazine is attracting a social group of young females, whome would find this colour scheme, text style and layout to be appealing to them.

The mid shot type is important for revealing the clothes the girls are wearing, this shows their image and gives my magazine cover identity as to what styles are included inside, once again this is why I wanted variation within the models. A close up would have even better for the sake of facial expression however I would have only used that shot for a solo artist, as I think it would be too challenging to get all three models to focus on the same facial expression, therefore if the shot wasn’t successful my front cover image could confuse my readers as to what the issue was actually about. The use of brighter lighting on the girls faces has connotations of brightness, positivity. With the dark and bold text and masthead on my front cover it could come across as a dingy magazine however this lighting technique almost reassures the readers that the magzine contents will not carry this throughout.
the costume of the three main models shows the centre girl to have a small part of her stomach revealed from her crop top. The right hand model wears a black tight dress with netted sleeves which could have sexualised connotations, however this is crucial as in society today it is the girl groups that look good that are generally more successful, well known, promoted, and idolised such as little mix or the Saturdays. The girls have to be sexualised and be stylish, otherwise my magazine may give off the wrong message that it is not recent and frequency updated (links to magazine name, Chart) As for hair, similarly to the little mix image, all of my models have different hair colours, shapes and styles. Which in general would guarantee to me that I haven’t favoured one style or colour in particular, therefore this could draw in a wider target audience as they will not feel excluded from the magazines styles.
